HVYBSL Thunder / Lightning Policy

HVYBSL Thunder / Lighting Policy

HVYBSL strives to provide a safe environment for players, coaches, officials, and fans attending games and practices at all of our fields.  Coaches, by volunteering have accepted the responsibility and obligation to ensure the safety of your players and coaching staff at all times.

In the event of a lightning sighting OR upon hearing thunder, games, practices, and warm-ups must immediately be suspended and all players and coaches must leave the playing fields.  There is a mandatory 30 minute delay before anyone is permitted to head back to the fields. The clock does not start until all players have left the playing area and are in a safe area.  The 30 minute clock resets with each subsequent lightning sighting or thunder peal.  This IS NOT optional and everyone is expected to obey these rules.

Failure to vacate a field immediately will result in a forfeit by the offending team(s) and a report being sent to the HVYBSL Board for further action.  Staying in a dugout covered with a tarp is NOT an option.  Players and coaches must leave the fields and seek shelter.  Arguing with umpires about leaving a field is not acceptable.  Players look up to their coaches for direction and it is a coach’s responsibility to quickly and safely evacuate their players when inclement weather occurs.

At Janowski and Duck Lake it is acceptable to seek cover under the concession stand overhangs.  At Highland and other fields, players and the other people in attendance should go to their vehicles for shelter.

Please note that lightning and thunder delays do not automatically end a game as long as there will be enough time to wait the 30 minutes and still play within the game's time limit.  Game time stops during a delay.  For example, if lightning were to strike at 7 PM, a game would be delayed until 7:30 PM (assuming no additional lightning or thunder).  So, if a game started at 6:00 PM and has a 2:00 hour time limit, there would be 30 minutes left once play resumes.  Please keep in mind no one can return to a field until the entire 30 minutes has elapsed and the senior umpire on site has given the all clear.
